What is Greenwashing?
Greenwashing is a play on the term "whitewashing" which means using misleading information to gloss over bad behaviour.
Greenwashing is the process of providing misleading information about a product or service being more environmentally friendly than it actually is. Greenwashing is considered an unsubstantiated claim leading to a consumer making a purchase choice they believe is doing the right thing by the environment, when in fact it is making little or no difference at all.
Companies involved in greenwashing behaviour might make claims that their products are from recycled materials or have energy-saving benefits and while partially true, these companies typically exaggerate these in an attempt to mislead consumers.
More and more companies are being exposed by a mainstream media that is focussed on holding bad actors to account. The reputational damage for a company that is seen to be Greenwashing is usually far greater than the benefit they had gained from appearing environmentally responsible.
At Sunified we encourage companies to make changes to their electricity by purchasing renewable energy from sources proven to be renewable. This is the only way to make real difference in the reduction of the carbon in the atmosphere and to the company’s carbon footprint.
Your company carbon reduction is measurable and can be verified by a third party which is now considered important information in annual reports and ESG profiles for supply chains. This transparency is valuable to consumers who more and more are looking for products and services they can trust to be environmentally focussed.
